Abstract:
The writer discusses the current trend of artists working on consumer products. Today, scores of contemporary artists are busy putting their stamp, and very bankable cachet, on all sorts of consumer products. In the 1960s and 1970s, artists working on commercial products risked damaging their reputation or being labelled a sellout, but, thanks to Andy Warhol, the "branding king," this issue has today been defused. For artists, the appeal is exposure, while for companies such as Absolut and Camels, the art world represents the powerful demographic of young trendsetters. There is concern, however, about how the art-commerce link plays out for artists and other members of the art world, with one persistent issue being the possibility of bureaucratic red tape, even censorship, interfering with the creative process.
