Abstract:

This article examines statistics and provides case studies about the economic status of Washington-area foundations and nonprofits.

Included is a Seattle Times analysis of nearly 2,600 nonprofits and 40 top foundations in the state of Washington. It revealed that fewer charitable foundations are being created and that nonprofit charities are having to spend more to raise funds. As a result, many nonprofits are finding it difficult to preserve what they have built while others have found it necessary to cut programs.

Additional research shows that the lavish giving of the 1990s, driven by the growth of the tech sector and stock-market gains, has ceased. However, many foundations and charities remain ahead of where they were before the boom because foundations have shifted their missions to helping nonprofits become more efficient in doing their work, and nonprofits are developing new fundraising strategies to stay in business.
