Developed by the National Committee on Cultural Diversity in the Performing Arts of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as part of the efforts of the Kennedy Center's Black Theatre and Playwright Project. This project was initiated three years ago by the Chairman's National Commission to Expand Black Participation in the Performing Arts, formed to assist in the production of new works in Black regional theatres around the country. In the course of the project, eight new plays were presented with assistance from the Kennedy Center's Corporate Fund and the General Foods Corporation; more than 100 new scripts were submitted for consideration to the participating regional theatres.
