Abstract:

Primarily an agricultural state, Mississippi has no cosmopolitan cities, few medium-sized cities, many small towns, and even more smaller rural communities. For this reason, it was felt that the 13 junior college districts of the state would provide an effective basis for a statewide survey of the arts activities and cultural resources. . . . In order to assess the state of the arts in Mississippi, the Mississippi Arts Commission contracted with the University of Mississippi Division of Continuing Education and Extension to conduct the survey.

As an initial step in the assessment, a data and opinion questionnaire, seeking information pertaining to the arts activities and programming during the 1971-72 fiscal year, was mailed to 107 community arts organizations and 38 state and privately supported universities, colleges and junior colleges. Data pertaining to state programs and educational resources were compiled with the assistance of state and private agencies. As a follow-up, personal interviews with leading figures involved in the arts were conducted.

In general, the survey is directed to satisfying the following objectives:

  1. To provide a reasonably comprehensive picture of the state's cultural resources.
  2. To provide data which will aid the Mississippi Arts Commission in the formation of guidelines for future planning.
  3. To describe current resources which will aid the Mississippi Arts Commission in determining future trends in arts education.
  4. To provide data which will indicate areas of concentration, both geographical and topical, in arts activities within the state.
  5. To assess the state's existing activity and potential in the field of creative or artistic crafts. (p. xv)
