Abstract:

The purpose of this panel is to review the respective roles of the public and private sectors in support of the arts. We will look at some new perspectives we hope on certain persistent questions. For example, whether there is a level at which government support acts as a disincentive to private giving. The magnitude and the diversity of arts financing on the one hand and on the other hand the chronic fiscal problems of many arts institutions raise another question. Whether corporate and governmental funds should be for ongoing operational support or for special programs? Another set of issues will relate to price elasticities and economic and social considerations in pricing strategies and because many people experience the arts as a result of services provided by the profit sector, the panel will also explore ways in which support that has traditionally been limited to the non-profit sector might be extended to for-profit activities.
