Abstract:

A major thrust of the Arts in General Education Program was the development of learning packages or units to complement the non-arts disciplines. Instructionl Package is defined by AGE as meeting the following criteria:

    1. Include a substantive base of one or more of the arts.
    2. Be designed for a specific period of time, level of instruction and individual differences in the students.
    3. Employ a variety of instructional materials and media which may be self-teaching and geared both to individual student use and teacher/student use.
    4. Relate to, but not restricted by, the existing curriculum structure.
    5. Be innovative and exemplary in the methods and strategies it proposes for instruction, and relate to the needs of the student.

The initial criteria or guidelines for the evaluation of these learning packages were formulated as a series of steps which evolved out of the curriculum development activities of the first year of the Project. This phase of the evaluation component operated on the assumption that formative evaluation occurs continuously and at all levels during the developmental process, providing immediate feedback to the curriculum designers and developers.
