Summary:

Abstract:

This volume of Arts Education Policy Review leads with an article about school partnerships. However, the emphasis of this issue is a collection of symposium articles about media literacy and arts education, a topic of increasing importance in schools.

The first article is a reprint of a major chapter from the book, Ready or Not, by Kay S. Hymowitz (Simon & Schuster). The essay provides a provocative overview of how media is reshaping not just the habits and spending, but the minds of modern youth, especially the group demographically known as tweens (seven to twelve-year-olds).

Subsequent articles detail general responses by authors with experience in:

  • government (Elizabeth Lewis);
  • college and university teaching (Samuel Intrator and Kathleen V. Hoover-Dempsey;
  • media literacy organizations (Diane Samples), and
  • arts journalism (Tom O'Brien).
