Abstract:

Review of the book, Art & Fact: Learning Effects of Arts Education [LOKV, Netherlands Institute for Arts Education, Utrecht, The Netherlands, 1996, ISBN 90-6997-077-5]. This book contains a collection of lectures given during the International Conference Art & Fact held in Rotterdam, The Netherlands on March 27th and 28th, 1995.

The conference speakers address two major themes, determined by conference organizers: the learning effects of arts education and the assessment of students' arts education progress; the papers published in Art & Fact are divided about equally between the two. Presumably as a result of participant interest, the first theme (the effects of arts education) constitutes an argument for teaching students to understand the arts - in other words, speakers extol the benefits of teaching aesthetic (including perceptual, critical and interpretive) skills. On the other hand, many speakers use the second theme (the assessment of students' arts education progress) to refer to assessment of students' skills in making or performing the arts, rather than their aesthetic responses to them.
