Abstract:

A national survey of arts teachers and supervisors was undertaken to assist the Arts Education Television Project at the Agency for Instructional Television (AIT) in identifying content areas and developing content objectives for an instructional television (ITV) series on Visual Art, Music, Drama, and Dance for students in grades six through nine. The specific objectives of the survey were:

    1. to assess teaching practices in arts education programs in the schools;
    2. to examine the use of materials by arts education teachers;
    3. to identify the current level of ITV use by arts education teachers; and to assess the potential for new audiovisual material for grades six through nine.

An Arts Education Questionnaire was developed, pilot-tested, and distributed to a total of 4201 arts teachers. A parallel survey was developed and distributed to 403 Art and Music supervisors. A total of 1320 teacher and 165 supervisor questionnaires were returned. (p. 1)
