Abstract:

In 1970 the New York State Council on the Arts initiated a study to take a long-range view of the place of the arts in a democratic society. A result of this study was the formation of the planning Corporation for the Arts as a nonprofit organization, and in April, 1971, a majority of its Board of Directors convened at Roland, Virginia to summarize their discussions. The Board arrived at a general agreement on the importance of certain principles and the urgency of bringing them into being. The principles are offered here in the following Statements on the Arts. Included in this report are suggestions for implying the Statement on the Arts.
