Summary:

You are very kind to invite me to participate in this meeting, which has such national significance in centering attention upon the performing arts. My gratitude for your kindness is tempered with a certain amount of diffidence, however, since I recognize full well that many of you are far more involved in the arts than I am. You, or at least many of you, are familiar with the detailed operations of orchestras, the theatre, and dance groups, while I am not. But I know we share together an understanding that the arts are vitally important to us as individuals, to our communities, and to our nation; we share also a great concern over their future. No person attempting to contribute to the educational leadership of this country could do so without considering the arts one of the foundation stones upon which the true greatness and strength of our nation must be built. And no person who is either professionally involved or in a direct lay advisory capacity can be so without sensing the urgency of the problems that must be solved without undue delay.

Abstract:

Includes introductory remarks by John S. Edwards and John D. Rockefeller 3rd.
