Summary:

Abstract:

For the purpose of comparing the arts to social services, I am going to divide the arts into three categories: (1) Production of art by individual artists; (2) Art in institutional settings: from passive forms of books, paintings and sculptures in their respective museums or libraries, to active forms of dance, drama and music performed by established companies or groups of artists; (3) Community arts: a very loose category, comprising art forms oriented to cultural or social causes associated with groups or community settings. A comparison of these categories of the arts to social services can then be based upon purpose, clients, process, evaluation and primary financing. (p. 89-90)
