Abstract:

This book contains the results of three major studies of the New England arts economy:

  1. The same study of New England's nonprofit arts industry in 1978, as measured by 2,830 cultural organizations originally reported in The Arts and the New England Economy published in 1980.

  2. A study of the economic impact of arts education spending in New England's primary and secondary schools.

  3. A study of the economic impact of audience spending in New England.

The report provides information on each state, a comparative analysis and an overview of the entire region. Overall figures for each individual state are listed separately, see analyzed section below.

Highlights of the study for the entire region include - New England's nonprofit arts industry: the economic impact of New England's nonprofit arts industry is over $1.5 billion; the spending impact of cultural organizations, providing over 40,000 jobs, was $560 million in 1978; the economic impact of arts education programs in primary and secondary schools, providing 11,910 full-time equivalent jobs, was $510 million in 1978; the impact of audience spending, reflected in over 25 million admissions to cultural events, was $353 million in 1979.
