New England's nonprofit arts industry, as measured by the expenditures and other economic activity in 1978 of 2,830 cultural organizations, is examined in this study. It demonstrates the important economic role of these arts organizations in a six-state region. The report provides information on each state, a comparative analysis and an overview of the entire region. Overall figures for each individual state are listed separately, see analyzed section below.

Abstract:

New England's nonprofit arts industry, as measured by the expenditures and other economic activity in 1978 of 2,830 cultural organizations, is examined in this study. It demonstrates the important economic role of these arts organizations in a six-state region. The report provides information on each state, a comparative analysis and an overview of the entire region. Overall figures for each individual state are listed separately, see analyzed section below.

Highlights of the study for the entire region include: New England's nonprofit arts industry, as measured by 2,830 cultural organizations: spent a total of $213 million which led to a total economic impact of $560 million in New England, and $75 million in the rest of the U.S.; provided 42,849 jobs; benefited from 7.2 million hours of volunteer work; had 5.6 million paid and unpaid admissions to events; and returned $10 million in federal income taxes and $2.7 million in state taxes.
