Abstract:

During January 1975, in keeping with the aims and purposes of the Albany League of Arts, an initial prospectus was outlined for the study of cultural resources in the Capital District. It contained five basic objectives:

    1. To develop an arts and cultural resources inventory for Albany, Columbia, Rensselaer, Saratoga and Schenectady counties.
    2. To assess the needs of the arts and arts-related organizations in those five counties.
    3. To develop an audience profile for the five counties.
    4. To identify and describe the programs and funding patterns of arts and arts-related organizations in the five counties.
    5. To identify and describe the economic impact of the arts industry in the five county area.

Objective #1 became a major project in its own right, and has been published separately (December 1975) but in conjunction with this document. Capital District Arts and Cultural Resources is available through the Albany League of Arts.

Over the past ten months objectives #2-5 have been met through personal interviews, questionnaires (both general and detailed), correspondence, public notice, and endless hours of intelligent, constructive, and supportive input from men and women, both locally and across the state, who cared about this project and were willing to answer when we asked.

What follows is a descriptive study of 127 arts and arts-related organizations in the Capital District. The study concerns itself with three main areas: the structure and function of the organizations themselves; the nature and needs of the audience they serve; the pattern, impact, and potential of their funding.
