Abstract:

Background paper prepared for the 46th American Assembly, of Columbia University, held at Arden House, Harriman, New York, November 1974.

[This] paper may well be the most controversial of the seven [in this book]. The relation of the living artist to insitutions of art, particularly museums, is always a subject evoking as many sharp divisions as there are artists.... [Many artists] would probably not agree with [the] assumption of the discernibility of quality or of the basic social irrelevance of art; but [the author's] suggestion that artists unite to explore and solve their own problems is certainly a relevant proposal that would do much to redress the existing imbalance in the art museum's role as patron of, or collaborator, with the contemporary artists. (General introduction, p. 3).
