Summary:

The Art Enrichment Program was developed by The Archer M. Huntington Art Gallery of The University of Texas at Austin for elementary students. A museum is an ideal environment for an educational program and we believe that we have developed a program which is basic, yet flexible, and one which is easily adapted to the needs of other age groups and kinds of museums.

The Art Enrichment Program was developed by The Archer M. Huntington Art Gallery of The University of Texas at Austin for elementary students. A museum is an ideal environment for an educational program and we believe that we have developed a program which is basic, yet flexible, and one which is easily adapted to the needs of other age groups and kinds of museums.

The structure of this program consists of a series of visits throughout the school year to the museum with preparation and follow-up lessons given for each visit.

In this manual, we provide justification for such a program including the kinds of goals that are attainable. Next, we offer step-by-step directions for initiating a museum program similar to the one developed at The University of Texas at Austin. Finally, we describe one year of the Art Enrichment Program.

In developing this implementation manual, we illustrate how a school art teacher can include a museum in his or her curriculum, as we also demonstrate for museum educators the steps in implementing such a program.

It is our plan to provide the information necessary for replication of this particular museum education program. It is our desire to share ideas which through experience we know to work with those interested in increasing the appreciation of the visual arts in this country. (Introduction)
