Official policy towards culture and the arts in the Netherlands, as applied in that area of its responsibility by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Recreation and Social Work, is concentrated on three main tasks: the preservation of the nation's cultural heritage and the provision of facilities for the creation of new cultural values; the task of making culture accessible to all; and finally the promotion of measures to increase popular interest in culture and the arts. These points are dealt with in greater detail in the sections which follow.

Abstract:

Official policy towards culture and the arts in the Netherlands, as applied in that area of its responsibility by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Recreation and Social Work, is concentrated on three main tasks: the preservation of the nation's cultural heritage and the provision of facilities for the creation of new cultural values; the task of making culture accessible to all; and finally the promotion of measures to increase popular interest in culture and the arts. CONTENTS
Introduction.
The arts and society, includes artistic freedom, government aid, experiments, Holland Festival, social measures, special stipends, and provident fund.
Visual arts and architecture, includes social policy.
Music and dance, includes orchestras, smaller musical ensembles, soloists, choirs, opera, innovation in the world of music, composers, jazz, pop music, bursaries, courses and competitions and amateur musical activities.
Dance, includes subsidies, theatre for young people, special productions, awards and distinctions, institutions, mime, cabaret, and puppet theatre.
Literature, includes financial aid, subsidies for publishers, subsidies for institutions and projects, and Dutch literature in other countries.
Films, includes production, production fund, Netherlands Film Academy, new generation, growth, subsidies and commissions, distribution and audience figures, Cinema Association, other circuits, censorship, television, film festivals, and film archives.
Museums, includes museums devoted to the visual arts, museums and the general public, administration, centralization or decentralization, training and institutions. Historic buildings and monuments, includes the Monuments Act, protected town and village views, renovation and demolition, restoration, voluntary organizations, archaeological field surveys, and archives.
