Arresting Images: Why We Need to Recast the Debate

Author: Bond, Jill and Hutchins, Jennifer

Media Type: Periodical (article)

Summary:

Abstract:

The authors discuss the book, Arresting Images , by Steven Dubin. Dubin's work examines the phenomenon by which we lose our audience, but proposes little in the way of how we can win these people back. Instead, he emphasizes the nature of the polarization. Unfortunately, it is not only the extreme portions of our society that find these images arresting: there is a large middle ground, which we are also losing.... If we are to ever recast the debate over art and culture, we must bring together those individuals in a community where controversies have occurred and create a constructive dialogue. (p. 272)
