Abstract:

Architects-in-Schools, a component of the National Endowment for the Arts Artists-in-Schools program, is directed by individual state arts agencies and offers schools the opportunity to develop built environment education programs with the assistance of a professional designer. This designer is called an Architect-in-Residence and does indeed become a member of the school community for part of a school year. This is a relatively new educational concept and one that has met with solid accomplishments in the numerous states and schools throughout the in which the program has been function ing during the past three years. Because interest in the program has been growing rapidly, we feel that an implementation guide, a how-to-do-it book about getting the program started in the state, school district or school and what to do when it gets there, is much needed.

This guide, drawn in part from experiences of past participants, describes what should be done and what could be done for a successful program. It is written especially for the use of state arts agency representatives, school district administrators, principals, teachers and members of the community who want to implement built environment education through a nationally recognized program.
