In 1977, a survey instrument entitled Questionnaire and Minority Faculty Profile was mailed to 1,353 two-year and four-year colleges, universities and conservatories as listed in the 1976-78 edition of the CMS Directory of Music Faculties in Colleges and Universities, U.S. and Canada. Responses were received from 539 of these, of which 249 were public institutions and 220 were private. Seventy institutions did not reveal their type.

Abstract:

In 1977, a survey instrument entitled Questionnaire and Minority Faculty Profile was mailed to 1,353 two-year and four-year colleges, universities and conservatories as listed in the 1976-78 edition of the CMS Directory of Music Faculties in Colleges and Universities, U.S. and Canada. Responses were received from 539 of these, of which 249 were public institutions and 220 were private. Seventy institutions did not reveal their type (see Part II).

Although the unit-of-analysis for the study is the institution and not the individual faculty member, it is appropriate to note that the focus of the analysis is on the individual faculty member. From this standpoint, the study is quite large, quite complex, and very revealing, both actually and potentially. Because of the amount and complexity of the data, detailed statistical information is not provided here. Only summaries and averages are reported. (p. 55-60)
