An alternative space is defined as an organization or group, which is dedicated to the support and promulgation of contemporary art in all its forms and which may or may not maintain a permanent exhibition space. The purpose of this study was to examine the field of alternative spaces in order to provide important information that can aid in planning for their future development and survival.

The 74 organizations surveyed were divided into twelve categories:

    1. Experimental visual art exhibition spaces that show work of new unaffiliated artists.
    2. Special interest exhibition spaces which were formed in response to minority needs or show a particular art form.
    3. co-op or artist run galleries.
    4. Small museums.
    5. Performance spaces.
    6. Book arts.
    7. Inter-disciplinary multi-media.
    8. Media/video.
    9. Film.
    10. Outdoor or environmental art; art in public places.
    11. Photography; workshops or outreach programs.
    12. Other.

Summary and highlights of this report include:

    • Alternative spaces are a phenomenon of the past decade, 68 alternative spaces were founded between 1969-1981.
    • The average budget is about $110,000; the median, $50,000.
    • 50% of the groups receive NEA funding.
    • A large majority are located in Soho and Tribeca. They pay an average rent of $12,000 annually which is below market. Many will face increases of 100%-400% when their commercial leases expire.
