Summary:

The Arts in General Education Project in the University City School District was the first of three major comprehensive pilot projects given support by the JDR 3rd Fund. Considering the magnitude and complexity of changes required to make the arts an integral part of general education for children through the elementary and secondary grades, it is not surprising that all of the Project's goals were not realized, particularly during the initial three-year grant period. Nevertheless, the accomplishments are impressive.

Abstract:

The Arts in General Education Project in the University City School District was the first of three major comprehensive pilot projects given support by the JDR 3rd Fund. Considering the magnitude and complexity of changes required to make the arts an integral part of general education for children through the elementary and secondary grades, it is not surprising that all of the Project's goals were not realized, particularly during the initial three-year grant period. Nevertheless, the accomplishments are impressive.

In addition to the values of the Project to the students of University City School District, the account of the Project's development provides a useful road map for other school systems that may wish to adapt this plan to their own needs and objectives. While it is helpful to know about successful procedures, it is just as important to know about mistakes that are made and problems that are encountered . These will also be found in the report which follows. (p. 5-6)
