Abstract:

The goal of the AGE schools is to demonstrate the best educational practices by showing how the arts can be used as a galvanizing factor for achieving school change. Its demonstration schools (originally 12, then 16) serve as a reference point for other schools who wish to move in the same direction. These schools plan and implement a variety of activities organized around five main objectives: to support and extend existing school arts programs and practices; to relate the arts to each other and to other subject areas; to identify and incorporate community arts resources on a regular basis; to provide special programs for children with special needs; and through the arts, to reduce the deleterious effects of cultural isolation.

This report is the first of several efforts to share experiences with other interested schools and districts. It will be supplemented by an administrator's manual, case studies of participating schools, and additional dissemination efforts of the JDR 3rd Fund and the Board of Education. (p. 2)
