OVERVIEW
Designed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Pittsburgh Creative Corps initiative engages artists and creative workers to activate the public realm while providing economic opportunity. An initiative of Riverlife and OPA, the program is a coordinated effort to commission artists and other creative workers to fabricate and install public art and create civic engagement programs throughout the Downtown neighborhood and river-adjacent spaces in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
After a period of intense social distancing and disconnection from public and civic life, Pittsburgh is establishing a roadmap to public wellness and civic recovery. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated our city’s existing inequities, now laid bare by the crisis. The Pittsburgh Creative Corps is designed to respond to urgent and timely needs, while also preparing to become a permanent fixture in civic life as the city reopens and adjusts to a new reality.
The infrastructure of the initiative addresses public health, community development, and engaging the creative practices of artists in order to bolster economic recovery, strengthen our communities’ resilience, and rebuild the city’s relationship to its public and civic spaces.
The Corps is supported by an Advisory Group of arts and culture leaders from the region who participate in project development and inform decision-making.
