Abstract:
This dissertation and research study explored the role of artistic expression in the treatment of people with traumatic brain injury. Aspects of the related fields of neuropsychology, rehabilitation and art therapy were considered historically and as they are currently practiced. Three case studies typified severe brain damage and associated functional impairment. the course of involvement in art therapy was compared to patients' neuropsychological and cognitive status as revealed in their behaviors, verbalizations, and standard neuropsychological evaluations. the artwork was representative of emotions and perceptions, and also of cognitive abilities and disabilities. There appeared to be improvement in functions such as in attention, concentration, memory, and organization, perhaps due to personal involvement in the non-threatening creative process. Elaboration and expansion of art in clinical practice for evaluating and treating deficits caused by brain injury were suggested in the research findings.
