By providing learner-centered, research-based instruction in the visual and performing arts, we support growth and personal achievement for students in grades K-8, especially those living in high-poverty areas who are most at risk of academic failure.

OVERVIEW

In a unique partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District and local charter schools, in addition to schools around the country, elementary and middle school students and their classroom teachers are linked to Inner-City Arts for experiential instruction in the visual and performing arts during their school day.

Once weekly, for up to 17 weeks per term, students and teachers work with our professional teaching artists, focusing on a specific art form—visual arts, ceramics, music, dance, drama, digital photography, or animation.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

All Inner-City Arts programs, taught by professional teaching artists, are designed to strengthen language development, develop critical thinking skills, promote literacy and improve learning outcomes overall. Most importantly, children and youth who participate in Inner-City Arts programs see themselves as capable of setting and reaching goals.

Working individually, in pairs, or in small groups, students develop community-building skills including cooperation and patience and gain verbal skills and confidence, as well as the capacity to trust their own creative instincts.
