Summary:

This article discusses the use of electric light sources in permanent light-art installations.

Abstract: This article discusses the use of electric light sources in permanent light-art installations. The challenge for artists using lighting is to transcend the obvious "wow" effects of the evolving technologies, and to exploit the potential of light's symbolic, cultural, and psychophysical legacy. Light artists must go beyond mere decoration of public spaces in favor of art that provides commentary, reflection, meaning, and new perspectives on people's environmental experience. The writer also identifies genres of light art.
